About Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine
It began with Elmer Sperry's gyro compasses, which made the magnetic compass redundant on steel ships. That line runs on to today's NAVIGAT compasses, still the reference from which the autopilot, the radar and the ECDIS take their heading.
The name most skippers know is VisionMaster: the bridge system in which radar, chart radar and ECDIS run on the same workstations. In the Net version those workstations are tied together in an Ethernet ring, so that a fault in one place does not drag the rest of the bridge down with it.
Sperry equipment is built for ships that sail year in, year out. That makes used units interesting: a refurbished display or panel PC will easily do another few years in the same installation, and the cabling and mounting stay as they are.
