The McMurdo R1 is a portable GMDSS VHF radio for survival craft and on-board use, tested and working, supplied with a new lithium emergency battery.
Overview
The R1 is built to the IMO requirements for survival craft two-way VHF radiotelephone equipment, which means it is designed to be stowed for years and to work the moment it is picked up. The housing is fully waterproof and impact resistant, and the controls are deliberately simple: large keys and a clear channel selector that can be operated with cold or gloved hands. Transmit power is up to 5 W and the radio covers the international marine VHF channels needed for distress and on-scene communication. Because the unit runs on a primary lithium battery, there is no charging routine to maintain — the battery is replaced at its expiry date and the radio is otherwise left in its bracket.
